Description

From the fairy tale with the same name – a wonderful treat to make with the kids on  a stormy day – it chases away the fear of “thunder and lightning."

Ingredients

Cream together, one at a time…

1 cup shortening

1-3/4 cup sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

3 eggs, separated (blend yolks in; beat whites until they are stiff, then fold in)

1 cup cold water

1/3 cup pureed tomatoes (yes, tomatoes – believe it or not, they add a nice tang)

Sift together:

2-1/2 cup flour

½ cup dry cocoa

1-1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

Directions

Mix dry mixture into creamy mixture.

Bake in 2 greased and floured 8-1/2” round pains at 350º for 35-40 minutes.
